First LEED Certified Projects of 2011
Two 7group projects were awarded LEED certification during the first quarter of 2011.
Centro Leoni, a two-building office complex in Milan, Italy, attained LEED Silver (CSv2.0). Located just south of the city’s central core in an area originally developed for industrial buildings, the project is now flanked by public gardens, an active railroad, schools and a supermarket. Both regional and recycled materials were used in the construction of this 575,800 sf project, and over 90% of all parking capacity is located underground to reduce heat island effect. The efficient irrigation system incorporates a rainwater sensor, reducing the use of potable water for maintenance of the native-species external gardens, and enthalpy heat recovery wheels reduce overall energy consumption. High daylighting levels and outdoor air ventilation rates, as well as wide glazing systems offer outdoor views and maintain a high comfort level for indoor spaces. The 21,200 sf adaptive-reuse Lindbergh Avenue School in York, PA is situated on a redeveloped brownfield, and reused nearly all of the existing wall, floor and roof elements to attain LEED Silver (Schools v2.0). Potable water use was reduced by more than 53% via dual-flush toilets, waterless urinals and low flow appliances, and no irrigation system was installed to further optimize water use. Energy cost savings of almost 34% were achieved with measures such as an improved thermal envelope, high efficiency glazing, reduced interior lighting power density, occupancy sensors, high efficiency water source heat pumps and energy recovery.
